Over Evaluatienetwerk webinar: Farewell to Evaluation: From Verdicts to Explanation

Het Vide evaluatienetwerk mag met trots aankondigen dat Professor Ray Pawson (University of Leeds) op maandag 7 april om 15:00 uur een webinar zal verzorgen voor het Vide evaluatienetwerk. In deze sessie blikt hij terug op zijn ervaringen en lessen bij het uitvoeren van evaluatieonderzoek.

Ray Pawson is een van de grondleggers van realist evaluation, een stroming binnen evaluatieonderzoek waarbij context een cruciale rol speelt. Toegepast op beleidsevaluatie, richt realist evaluation zich niet op de vraag "werkt het beleid?", maar op:

• Voor wie werkt het beleid?
• Wanneer werkt het beleid?
• Waarom werkt het beleid in die gevallen?

In 1997 publiceerde hij samen met Nick Tilley het standaardwerk "Realistic Evaluation", dat deze aanpak wereldwijd op de kaart zette. In 2024 bracht hij "How to Think Like a Realist. A Methodology for Social Science" uit. Hierin behandelt hij drie belangrijke uitdagingen in sociaalwetenschappelijk onderzoek: causaliteit, objectiviteit en generaliseerbaarheid.

Hoewel Ray inmiddels met emiritaat is, zijn we heel blij dat hij speciaal voor Vide een afscheidswebinar verzorgt. Dit webinar, met de werktitel: "Farewell to Evaluation: From Verdicts to Explanations" zal ingaan op zijn gedachten over de toekomst van het vakgebied evaluatieonderzoek.

De bijeenkomst wordt geleid door professor Frans Leeuw, emeritus hoogleraar aan Maastricht University. Frans Leeuw schreef voor Beleidsonderzoek Online een boekbespreking van "How to Think Like a Realist", waarin hij ook terugkijkt op de bijdrage van Ray Pawson aan het vakgebied. Na de presentatie zal Ray vragen van deelnemers beantwoorden.

The Dutch Evaluation Network, part of Vide, is proud to announce that Professor Ray Pawson (University of Leeds) will be hosting a webinar for the Vide Evaluation Network on Monday, April 7, 2025, at 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. (CET). The webinar will be hosted by the Vide Evaluation Network. In this session, he will look back on his experiences and lessons learned in conducting evaluation research.

Ray Pawson is one of the founders of realist evaluation, a movement within evaluation research in which context plays a crucial role. Applied to policy evaluation, realist evaluation focuses not on the question “does the policy work?” but on:

• For whom does the policy work?
• When does the policy work?
• Why does the policy work in those cases?

In 1997, Pawson and Nick Tilley published the standard work “Realistic Evaluation,” which put this approach on the map worldwide. In 2024, he released: “How to Think Like a Realist. A Methodology for Social Science”. In it, he addresses three key challenges in social science research: causality, objectivity and generalizability.

Although Ray is now retired, we are very pleased that he is hosting a farewell webinar especially for Vide. This webinar, with the working title: “Farewell to Evaluation: From Verdicts to Explanations” will address his thoughts on the future of the field of evaluation research.

The session will be led by Professor Frans Leeuw, emeritus professor at Maastricht University. Frans Leeuw wrote a book review in Dutch of “How to Think Like a Realist” for the website Beleidsonderzoek Online, in which he also looks back on Ray Pawson's contribution to the field. After the presentation, Ray will answer questions from participants.
